What are some other prostate cancer evaluation procedures?

If the DRE or PSA are unusual, your physician may repeat the tests or request an ultrasound and other procedures. These evaluation tools may include:
transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) - a test using sound wave echoes to create an image of the prostate gland to visually inspect for abnormal conditions such as gland enlargement, nodules, penetration of tumor through capsule of the gland, and/or invasion of seminal vesicles; may also be used for guidance of needle biopsies of the prostate gland and/or guiding the nitrogen probes in cryosurgery.
computed tomography scan (Also called a CT or CAT scan.) - a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of x-rays and computer technology to produce cross-sectional images (often called slices), both horizontally and vertically, of the body. A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat, and organs. CT scans are more detailed than general x-rays.
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination of large magnets, radiofrequencies, and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body.
radionuclide bone scan - a nuclear imaging method that helps to show whether the cancer has spread from the prostate gland to the bones. The procedure involves an injection of radioactive material that helps to locate diseased bone cells throughout the entire body, suggesting possible metastatic cancer.
(lymph node and/or prostate) biopsy - a procedure in which tissue samples are removed (with a needle or during surgery) from the body for examination under a microscope; to determine if cancer or other abnormal cells are present.
The diagnosis of cancer is confirmed only by a biopsy.

Types of non-cancerous prostate problems:

There are clinical conditions of the prostate gland that are not cancer, including the following:
prostatism - any condition of the prostate that causes interference with the flow of urine from the bladder.
prostatitis - an inflamed condition of the prostate gland that may be accompanied by discomfort, pain, frequent or infrequent urination, and, sometimes, fever.
prostatalgia - pain in the prostate gland.
benign prostatic hyperplasia (Also called BPH or benign prostatic hypertrophy.) - a specific term that defines the condition of an enlarged prostate. BPH is the most common non-cancerous prostate problem. It can cause discomfort and problems urinating. Although it is not cancer, BPH symptoms are often similar to those of prostate cancer.
impotence (Also called erectile dysfunction.) - the inability to achieve or maintain an erection.
urinary incontinence - the loss of bladder control.
These problems are quite common and may happen to men of all ages.

In addition to an annual physical examination that includes blood, urine, and possibly other laboratory tests, the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society suggest consulting your physician about these recommendations for the evaluation of the prostate gland:

Facts about the prostate gland:The prostate is a sex gland in men. It is about the size of a walnut, and surrounds the neck of the bladder and urethra - the tube that carries urine from the bladder. It is partly muscular and partly glandular, with ducts opening into the prostatic portion of the urethra. It is made up of three lobes: a center lobe with one lobe on each side.
The prostate gland secretes a slightly alkaline fluid that forms part of the seminal fluid, a fluid that carries sperm.

Prostate disease

If you have any of the symptoms of prostate enlargement and prostate cancer, or prostatitis, you should speak with your GP. Your GP may carry out the following tests, or may refer you to a urologist (a doctor who specialises in the urinary system) for tests.
Your doctor will ask you about the symptoms you have been experiencing, and how often you pass urine. You may also have a digital rectal examination (DRE). This is when a doctor inserts a gloved finger into your rectum so they can feel one side of your prostate through the front wall of your rectum. This test may be uncomfortable, but is usually painless.
When your prostate is examined during a rectal examination, a cancerous prostate will feel lumpy or irregular, while an enlarged prostate will feel smooth and even. An inflamed prostate (prostatitis) may be tender to the touch, and your penis may discharge a small amount of pus when your prostate is massaged with a finger.
Your doctor may also do a blood test that measures your PSA (prostate specific antigen). PSA is a protein that is produced naturally by the prostate, and high levels of it can indicate increased prostate activity. This means that the level can be raised if your prostate is enlarged or cancerous, or if you have prostatitis.
A high level of PSA in your blood doesnt however necessarily mean that you have a condition affecting your prostate. It is also possible that the level of PSA in your blood will not be affected by a prostate condition. Therefore, a PSA blood test will be used alongside other methods of diagnosis.
Other types of blood and urine tests may also be used. For example, you may have a test taken to find out how your kidneys are working, or to test for bacterial infections that can cause prostatitis.

If you're planning to transform your existing middleware into a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) platform, consider using Apache Synapse. This easy-to-use open source alternative to proprietary Enterprise Service Buses (ESBs) costs less and requires less effort. This article gives you a thorough introduction to Apache Synapse and provides a use case to demonstrate how you can integrate and reuse existing applications using an SOA approach.
Overview of Apache Synapse
Synapse is a simple and Web services management and integration broker that can form the basis of an SOA and Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). Synapse, which recently graduated from the Apache incubator, is now a full-fledged Apache initiative as part of the Web Services project and is an offshoot of the highly successful Apache Axis2 project. It offers the ability to mediate, manage, and transform messages among a variety of different applications.

Although originally developed by Netscape as a way of ensuring the security of e-commerce transactions, SSL has become a low-cost alternative to IPSec-based virtual private networks:
Browser-based SSL alternatives require little or no software on remote PCs, and in most cases any PC with a browser can be used to make the secure connection, as long as the user can authenticate to a central server. And SSL firewall ports that the traffic uses are generally left open, so firewall reconfiguring is usually unnecessary. The idea is that SSL's simplicity translates into an easier installation and long-term cost savings because of simpler ongoing support.
The SSL standard is not a single protocol, but rather a set of accepted data transfer routines that are designed to protect the integrity of transmitted messages.
SSL relies on certificates - digital identification cards - and keys. Certificates include the name of the certificate authority that issued the certificate, the name of the entity to which the certificate was issued, the entity's public key, and time stamps that indicate the certificate's expiration date.
